Junk versus scrap
Junk generally means items with no resale or recovery value. Scrap means material, usually metal, with recoverable value. An old steel cabinet might be scrap; a broken wooden chair is junk. Many items are a mix, and assessment is the way to find out.
How items are assessed
- What it is made of, and whether the metal can be separated.
- Its condition and the effort needed to remove it.
- The quantity and location.
- Any hazardous parts such as batteries or refrigerants.
